The songs by Amsterdam-based singer-songwriter Chagall are powerful testimony of what inspires her. Moved by both British underground beats as well as more mainstream pop, her music results in an exciting mixture of soulful pop and electronics. By not being afraid to blend different styles of song and production, Chagall’s curiosity and love of music come together in an unique and open sound. Her single ‘Any Common Rock’ is exemplary for this style.
Holland was surprised during the summer of 2011 by Chagall’s song ‘Breathe’, which was recorded together with the producer duo, Bronstibock. She got the support of DJ Rob Stenders of 3FM who had her perform live in his show several times. 3FM proclaimed Chagall ‘Serious Talent’ which led to daytime airplay, a performance in Holland’s most popular talk show De Wereld Draait Door, a Serious Talent Award nomination and a performance during the 3FM Awards.
After releasing her self-titled EP independently Chagall performed at the Noorderslag festival where she was discovered by EMI/Universal. Early 2012 she signed a record deal with them and started working on her first album. For this record Chagall got to work with a few of her main musical heroes from the UK including Fink and Royce Wood Jr. (Jamie Woon) with whom she wrote ‘Any Common Rock’, her single released in January 2013. In the Netherlands she worked with hiphop formation The Opposites.
With a band that can handle both the electronic and acoustic sounds of her music, Chagall played at a number of major Dutch festivals including 5 Days Off, Paaspop, Pitch and Solar. She also supported Little Dragon, Example and Florence + the Machine and performed with DJ Don Diablo.
